Frequently asked questions

How does the free trial work?
Just register a username and email address. After you have confirmed your email address, you can log in and choose the level of membership and options you require. Your account will be set up immediately and you can start creating your website straight away. You will have 14 days in which to try out your website. Full details are here.

Can I use my own domain name?
Yes, our domain name hosting service improves SEO (search engine optimisation).
more info on domain names »

Or you can instead link your domain name to your LayerSpace using web forwarding also known as web diversion. if used with framing or cloaking, this retains your domain name in the address bar of the browser so the LayerSpace address is not shown.

For more information about domains, please see the user guide.

Can I upgrade or downgrade my membership?
Yes you can change the level of membership you are on at any time including during the free trial. If you upgrade you will need to pay a pro-rata fee to account for the difference in price up to the next payment date. If you downgrade you will simply be charged the new rate from the next payment date.

Are Flash sites as search engine friendly as non Flash or HTML ones?
Yes - LayerSpace Flash templates are optimised and loaded into the browser using dynamic scripting which is search engine friendly, and the important aspects of a page such as title and description are the same for a Flash site or an HTML site.

What is the difference between a Space and a HubSpace?
A Space can be thought of as being a standalone website. A HubSpace acts as a central link or portal to your Spaces. You can add Spaces to your HubSpace by using Groups. See the userguide for more information.

Can I get statistics about visitors to my site? (counter)
Yes, you can use a Google Analytics account (or similar) to monitor visitors and get all sorts of other information about how your site is being used.
Google do not charge for the service. For more information about this, please see the user guide.

Is there protection against image thieves?
We provide some forms of protection against this, namely: HTML templates have an alert against people attempting to drag an image off the page. The auto image uploader also attempts to copy Meta data such as your name if it is embedded in the image. Flash templates are more difficult to copy images from but it is worth remembering that if someone wants to copy an image they will find a way around any protection. Even large watermarks covering an image can be retouched if someone is determined enough.

Will my website appear in Google/search engines?
LayerSpace websites are optimised to make the best use of your content to improve your ranking in Google and other search engines. We have written a rough guide to SEO (search engine optimisation) which is full of useful advice about how to improve your search engine ranking.

Why do I need multiple websites?
One website is great for showing your portfolio, but the ability to create several websites is incredibly useful.
For instance if you want to keep different styles or genres of work separate, you can do so easily.

And your clients will be astonished to see the results of their shoot uploaded to their own exclusive website - branded and styled to match your main site, so there is no confusion.

LayerSpace provides comprehensive tools to combine any, all or none of your websites so you can create a 'clients' area, with each website password protected if required.

Just choose a membership level from the 'multi-space' list.

How does e-commerce work?
E-commerce requires the LightBox option.
First you create price lists, then you enable selling and specify which price list to apply to each image or to all images.
Images will then have a 'buy' button next to them which when clicked will show a choice taken from the price list.
The buyer then either continues to shop or goes to the checkout.
Payment is made either to your PayPal account or an email is sent to you so you can arrange payment with the buyer.
No commission is charged by LayerSpace for any transactions.

What size should my images be to upload?
The ideal size to upload is 1000 pixels on the longest edge. The resolution will be changed to 72dpi by the upload tool.

How many images can I upload to a gallery?
It depends on the level of membership that you choose. Please look at the price plan comparison to see what you get with each.

How is payment taken?
Payments are taken by credit card. Payments are handled by respected internet payment company NETBANX - this means no credit card information is seen or stored by LayerSpace, making the site very secure.

Payments are taken automatically every month from your credit card until such time as you cancel your LayerSpace account.

Customers who joined before 10th September 2009 have the option to change from PayPal to the new system. PayPal is no longer offered as a payment option for new customers due to PayPal's inflexible approach.
